The 1993 Oslo Accords signed between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization led to the creation of the Palestinian Authority
Reactions inside and outside of Israel caused a statement by the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu who reportedly compared the Oslo Accords to the October 7 attacks by Hamas.
The Oslo Accords of 1993 signed between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization led to the creation of Palestinian Authority and established limited Palestinian autonomy in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Israeli media reported that during last night’s meeting of the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Netanyahu stated that since the Oslo Accords were signed the number of Israelis who have been killed is similar to the number of those killed in Hamas attacks of October 7, “albeit over a longer period of time.”
According to the Israeli authorities, at least 1,200 people were killed in these attacks Hamas.
According to the Ynet news website, its leader Labor Party reacted strongly to this comparison. And opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized Netanyahu for the statement: “It is impossible to understand the level of detachment and cynicism of the prime minister, who is waging a malignant wartime political campaign to rid himself of the responsibilities, blame others and create hatred. The nation deserves a different leadership,” he stressed.
Today, the Israeli Prime Minister stressed that he will not allow Israel to “repeat the mistake of Oslo”, referring to the Accords. However, he did not specify what these errors are.
Speaking of the different positions of Israel and the US on the post-war era in Gaza Strip, the Israeli prime minister stressed: “Yes, there is a disagreement regarding the ‘next day of Hamas’ and I hope we will reach an agreement here as well,” Netanyahu adds. “I want to make my position clear: I will not allow Israel to repeat the mistake of Oslo.”
A senior Palestinian Authority official said today that Netanyahu’s statements equating the Oslo Accords with what happened on October 7 “confirm that he is waging a war against all Palestinians.”
“We tell Netanyahu that Oslo died under the tracks of his tanks, sweeping cities, villages and our camps from Jenin to Rafah,” he said in a post on X o Hussein al-Sheikh
