Kenneth Loth, 58, of Ontario, Canada, had shipped nearly 160 packets of sodium nitrite to Canada and more than 1,200 packets to people in 40 countries
A Canadian man who allegedly helped over a dozen young people in the province of Ontario to kill themselves by mailing them poison is charged with 14 counts of second-degree murder, police announced today.
THE Kenneth Law58, had previously been charged with 14 counts of counseling or assisting suicide.
Police said Law mailed about 160 packages of sodium nitrite to people in Canada and also sent at least 1,200 packages to addresses in more than 40 countries.
“It is clearly important … to make so many (charges) and the matter is being taken very seriously by the investigative team,” the inspector general told a news conference. Simon James of the police at Yorka northern neighborhood of Toronto.
The victims ranged in age from 16 to 36, and James declined to name them and did not explain why the charges against Law were upgraded. He added that he does not know how many people abroad may have died from packages sent by the accused.
“We continue to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in various countries,” the police inspector stressed.
Canada’s public broadcaster, Canadian Broadcasting Corp, citing official records and statements, reported that Law may be linked to 117 deaths worldwide, most of them in Britain. She stated that her authorities New Zealand, France, Ireland, Italy, Germany and Switzerland confirmed that Lo sent parcels to their countries.
The accused, who police alleged used various websites to approach his victims, is in jail and will appear in court again on December 19.
“One of the difficulties we face is that some of these sites are in other countries where Canadian law doesn’t apply,” James pointed out.
If found guilty, Law will become one of the worst mass murderers in history Canada. In April 2020, a 51-year-old man shot and killed 22 people in rural Nova Scotia before being killed by police.
