The Constitutional Court of Albania announced the temporary suspension of the procedures for the approval, by the country’s parliament, of the agreement with Italy on immigration.

The agreement, signed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, provides for the creation of two closed centers for irregular migrants in northern Albania that will be governed by Italian law.

As the Italian newspaper La Stampa writes, the Constitutional Court of Albania will have to consider two appeals against the agreement. The first is of the Democratic Party which is in the opposition and the second of MPs who are close to it.

The appeals claim that the agreement with Italy violates the Albanian Constitution and international treaties signed by the country.

The ratification of the relevant agreement by the Albanian parliament is consequently “frozen” until the decision of the supreme judges, for which there is a margin of three months.
