After the outcry and backlash caused by Israeli images of naked Palestinian prisoners that came to light, the Israeli leadership is reportedly acknowledging that it was a wrong tactic that will not be repeated, the US reports.

In particular, State Department spokesman Matt Miller said Israel informed the administration of US President Joe Biden that photos published last week with Palestinian men wearing only their underwear after being arrested by the IDF in Gaza should not have been received or published.

The Israelis “made it clear afterwards that they would not follow this practice again and that after the searches of the detainees, they would immediately return their clothes,” Miller said during the briefing.

Hundreds of young and old Palestinians appeared in these photos and videoswhich Israel claims were not officially released by the IDF, but that those arrested included surrendered Hamas fighters.

Miller said he understood Israel’s security concerns over fears of suicide attacks against Israel with concealed explosive belts, but stressed that “the important thing is that they get their clothes back immediately and behave in a manner consistent with humane treatment of prisoners”.
