In early 2024, EU leaders will return to the table to renegotiate the revision of the multiannual financial framework, the president of the European Council announced.

Charles Michel stressed after the conclusion of the first day of the Summit that 26 leaders agreed with the proposal in all its elements.

“I have to be very precise, one leader, that of Sweden, has to consult his country’s parliament in the normal process for that country and (another) leader could not agree,” Mr Michel clarified.

He noted that “all the priorities, support for Ukraine, migration, the solidarity fund, defence, are part (of the negotiating framework), which means we will come back to the issue early next year and try to reach consensus on to be able to implement the plan”.

Mr. Michel pointed out, however, that tonight was sent “a very strong message to the European citizens, a very strong message to the Ukrainian citizens, because we decided to grant candidate country status to Georgia, to start accession negotiations with Ukraine and with Moldova, to make a very important step with Bosnia-Herzegovina”.
