Mr. Sunak said that Israel has the right to defend itself against the “heinous terrorist attack committed by Hamas”, but at the same time “it must do so in accordance with humanitarian law”.

The shift of the British government in favor of a “sustainable ceasefire” in Gaza was confirmed by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Rishi Sunak.
Speaking at noon from Scotland, Mr. Sunak said that Israel has the right to defend itself against the “heinous terrorist attack committed by Hamas”, but at the same time “it must do so in accordance with humanitarian law”.
As the British leader continued, “it is clear that too many civilian lives have been lost and no one wants to see this conflict continue even a day longer than necessary.”
For this reason, he added, the British government is calling for a “sustainable ceasefire”, under which the hostages will be released, rockets from Hamas will stop being fired at Israel and humanitarian aid will continue to be delivered to the Gaza Strip.
The British Foreign Minister, Lord Cameron, expressed the same position in an article in the Sunday Times.
