Political agreement on the Pact on Migration and Asylum was reached shortly after overnight consultations between the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission.

Particularly, the Spanish presidency states in a post on Platform X: “The Council and the European Parliament have made significant progress on reform to improve the EU’s immigration and asylum system. Political agreement has been reached on the five files of the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum.”
Ursula von der Leyen: Pact ensures effective European response to Europe’s migration challenge
“Immigration is a European challenge that requires European solutions”something that the Pact on Migration and Asylum can ensure, stresses European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in her statement following the announcement of a political agreement.
She notes that “Member States at our external borders must manage illegal immigration” and explains that “the Pact on Migration and Asylum will ensure that there is an effective European response to this European challenge”.

Also, Ursula von der Leyen points out that “Europeans will decide who comes to the EU and who can stay, not traffickers”. adding that the Pact means protecting those in need. At the same time, he adds, it will ensure that “Member States share the effort responsibly, showing solidarity with those who protect our external borders, while preventing illegal immigration into the EU”.

Finally, Ursula von der Leyen thanked the Vice-President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schina and Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson for the “hard work” to reach this deal.
