Ismail Haniyeh visit to Egypt rekindles hopes of new truce – Israel ready for new ceasefire in exchange for more hostages
Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh is in Cairo, where he will hold talks with Egyptian officials, mainly about developments in the war with Israel in the Gaza Strip, according to Reuters.
Ismail Haniyeh’s visit to Egypt rekindles hopes for a new Israel-Gaza truce. Israeli President Isaac Herzog said his country is ready for another humanitarian pause in Gaza in exchange for as many hostages as possible.
According to CNN analyst Barak Ravid, citing two Israeli officials and another source with knowledge of the matter, Israel has presented a proposal to Hamas that includes a week-long ceasefire in exchange for the release of about 40 hostages,
As reported by the American news site Axios, the proposal aims to free hostages who include women, the elderly and those in need of urgent care. The deal is being presented to Hamas through Qatari intermediaries, the CNN analyst pointed out.
Michael Herzog, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, confirmed that Israel is willing to stop the fighting on the condition that as many hostages as possible are released.
Egypt, along with Qatar, are two countries that helped broker a week-long truce between Israel and Hamas last month that led to the release of about 100 hostages held by Hamas in exchange for 240 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.
International pressure has since mounted for a new ceasefire that could increase aid sent to besieged Gaza.
