Moldova announced today that it has received a surveillance radar from the French company Thales, taking the first step towards acquiring an air defense system.

Defense Minister Anatoly Nosati said the surveillance system would be able to monitor the airspace of the entire country, which borders Ukraine and Romania.

“We have no anti-aircraft defense, no missiles, no aircraft. The next step is an air defense system for critical infrastructure, including the airport, power plants, etc. This is just the beginning,” said Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, at least four cases of missile debris have been recorded in the northern part of the country.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova, Nikos Popescu, welcomed the acquisition of a surveillance radar, underlining that the ultimate goal is “to build a future with more security and prosperity of one of the European family”. The European Union decided a few days ago to start accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine.

Moldova’s relations with Russia have deteriorated during the war in Ukraine, which Chisinau has roundly condemned.
