Former United States President Donald Trump urged the US Supreme Court today to reject a request by federal prosecutors to immediately consider his claim that he cannot be prosecuted for trying to sway the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.

It was preceded by special counsel Jack Smith’s emergency request, which if granted would put Trump’s claim before the Supreme Court before a federal appeals court has even ruled on the matter.

Trump’s lawyers point out that the special counsel is urging the Supreme Court to override the prescribed procedure through the Court of Appeal. They also argue that former presidents cannot face criminal charges for their actions while in the White House.

Judge Tania Chatkan had on December 1 rejected that claim, causing Donald Trump to appeal to a federal appeals court in Washington. On December 11, Special Counsel Jack Smith urged the US Supreme Court to rule on the matter immediately so as not to delay the start of the trial.

The Colorado Supreme Court ruled yesterday Tuesday that Donald Trump is ineligible to run for presidentbecause of his actions when his supporters attacked the federal Capitol on January 6, 2021 – a decision marked as a political shock, with potentially serious consequences, in the midst of an already stormy election campaign ahead of the November 2024 presidential election.

All eyes are now on the US federal Supreme Court, to which the Republican former president will appeal, as announced by his representative.
