The Turkish armed forces on Wednesday launched airstrikes against PKK positions in northern Iraq, destroying 14 targets, Turkey’s Defense Ministry said.

The airstrikes were launched around 19:00 (local time, 18:00 Greek time) in the areas of Gara, Hakurk and Qandil, the relevant announcement states.

During the operation, locations where there was information that high-ranking officials of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) had taken refuge were hit and “many terrorists were neutralized”, claims the Turkish Ministry of Defense.

Turkish authorities use the term “neutralized” to indicate that “terrorists” were killed or captured during an operation.

The PKK, which has been waging an armed struggle against the Turkish state for three decades, has been designated a “terrorist organization” by several states and international organizations, such as NATO and the European Union.
