Ukrainians in the age range between 25 and 60 in European states, including Germany, able to serve, will be asked to report to conscription centers
As the Ukrainian government seeks to recruit hundreds of thousands of people to counter Russia’s invasion, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said on Wednesday that in 2024 nationals abroad will be called up to serve in the armed forces.
Ukrainians in the age range between 25 and 60 years old in European states, including Germany, able to serve will be asked to report to conscription centers, Mr. Umeroff told German media, including Bild and Die Welt newspapers.
The minister spoke of an “invitation”, however he explained that there will be sanctions if those responsible do not appear.
“We are still discussing what we should do if they don’t come forward voluntarily,” he said.
According to the president’s government Volodymyr ZelenskyUkraine wants its armed forces bolstered by 450,000-500,000 men to counter Russia.
However, neither the economic nor the political framework has been clarified until now. President Zelensky called conscription a “delicate issue”.
According to Minister of Defense Umerov, it is important that there be justice. He stated that in the future, those concerned should be informed in advance how they will be trained and equipped, when and where they will serve and when they will be discharged.
Although authorities banned it when war broke out in late February 2022, thousands of Ukrainians fled abroad before Kiev sent out conscription orders.
