Poland’s parliament has passed a resolution ruling unconstitutional some provisions of the judicial reform introduced by the previous ultra-conservative Polish government, undermining the independence of the judiciary. It thus paves the way for the rollback of reforms that have brought Warsaw into conflict with the European Union, which has accused the Law and Justice Party (PiS) government of violating the rule of law and decided to withhold billions of euros in response. of the recovery fund.

The new pro-European coalition government has made the withdrawal of judicial reform and the release of European funds for Warsaw an absolute priority.

According to the decision passed by the Polish parliament, a series of decisions included in the judicial reform are unconstitutional and calls for the resignation of the members of the National Judicial Council, whose appointment is considered illegal.

The decision is of symbolic importance…it finds that we have only a constitutional problem with one of the bodies that has a very important competencePolish Justice Minister Adam Bodnar told parliament, PAP news agency reported.

The decision was approved by 239 MPs, while 169 voted against.

However, Polish President Andrzej Duda, a PiS ally, has expressed his support for the judicial reform and this could mean the new government will face problems in recalling it.

The Polish parliament also passed a resolution to restore impartiality for public media. This was followed by the dismissal of the management team of the PiS-controlled Polish public media, which was systematically accused of biased reporting, broadcasting government propaganda and verbal attacks on the opposition.
