Mexico: Three arrests for the murder of journalist Lourdes Maldonado

by

Mexican authorities announced on Wednesday the arrest of three people as part of the investigation into the murder of journalist Lourdes Maldonado, whose death last month in the border town of Tijuana in the northwestern part of the country, caused a wave of indignation, widespread and condemnation statements at international level.

The three alleged perpetrators of the journalist’s murder – after which mass mobilizations were organized with a central demand of the Mexican government to work for the better protection of media workers – were arrested yesterday, Tuesday and Wednesday in Tijuana, said the Minister of Security, R Rodrigues, without naming them.

Undersecretary of Security Ricardo Mejia said the motive for the crime remained unknown, adding that he hoped investigations would shed light on the case.

Established in Tijuana since the 1990s, television reporter Lourdes Maldonado had sought direct protection in 2019 from the President of the Republic, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, stressing that he “feared for her life”.

She was then at loggerheads with her former employer, Jaime Bonilla’s Primer Sistema de Noticias (PSN) television network, a former governor of Baja California (2019-2021) and a strongman in the state’s MORENA party. She finally won, a few days before her murder, in the lawsuit against PSN for unfair and abusive dismissal.

She is one of four journalists killed in Mexico as early as 2022 by the non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

A few days before that, photojournalist Margarito Martines was killed, also in Tijuana.

Roberto Toledo, a news website contributor in the central state of Michoac .n, and José Luis Gaboa, a journalist and activist in Veracruz, were assassinated in January.

According to the Mexican Human Rights Commission, an independent body, some 100 journalists have been killed in Mexico since 2000. The Article 19 NGO counted 145 murders between 2000 and 2021.
