Just hours before the US approved a UN Security Council resolution calling for a halt to fighting and an increase in aid to the besieged enclave, Israel announced it was expanding its military operation in Gaza.

The Israel Defense Forces on Friday ordered residents of the Al-Bureij refugee camp in Deir al-Balah and several other areas in central Gaza to move to shelters for safety, marking the start of a ground operation into the center.

The military operation so far has been largely focused on northern Gaza and parts of the southern side of the strip.

Israeli military officials said they believe they are close to defeating Hamas fighters in the Sejaya neighborhood of Jabaliya, the last remaining Hamas stronghold in northern Gaza.

Earlier today, an Israeli airstrike hit the Al-Bureij refugee camp, a hospital spokesman said.

At least three people were killed and 10 others wounded, Dr. Khalil Al Daqran, a spokesman for Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, told CNN.
