THE Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas issued a statement on the resolution adopted by the UN Security Council on the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, commenting that it is an “inadequate step” to cover the major needs in the enclave.

“In the past five days the US Govt worked hard to remove from the resolution its essence and to present this weak version (…) It defies the will of the international community and the United Nations General Assembly to end Israel’s attack on our defenseless Palestinian people,” the Islamist organization said in a statement.

With 13 votes in favor, no votes against and two abstentions, the resolution finally passed. Russia and the US were the two countries that abstained from the vote.

After the US rejected the resolution at the previous meeting, the text was redrafted to include Washington, removing the call for an immediate and sustainable cessation of hostilities. On the contrary, calls for the creation of conditions for such a thing.
