At least 19 people, including 10 children, were killed and about 40 others injured Saturday when a bus overturned on a highway north of the Nicaraguan capital, authorities said.

The accident, near Rancho Grande, a municipality in Matagalpa province, north of Managua, killed “19” people and injured about 40 others, according to the Nicaraguan government website, which cited data from the health ministry.

The ten children who went missing were between the ages of 4 and 16, according to the same source.

Authorities said the vehicle had exceeded the speed limit and that police arrested the bus driver when he tried to flee.

“We are disturbed, we completely share (…) the pain of the families and we call for more rigor in the application of the laws on the means of transport,” said Rosario Murillo, vice president – and wife – of President Daniel Ortega, in statements to the state Channel 4 television network.

The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle with around 70 passengers. The vehicle “overturned” while crossing a bridge, according to Vice President Murillo.

Footage released by the media showed the yellow bus on its side, impaled on a metal bar that went through it, and bodies on the road.
