Ukrainian: Looks for a diplomatic solution to the “Shape of Normandy”

by

The so-called so-called high-level political and diplomatic advisers are meeting today, Thursday, in Berlin. “Shape of Normandy” (Normandie Format), a dialogue forum on Ukraine involving France, Germany, France and Russia. The group was first formed in 2014 with the participation of Chancellor Merkel, French President Hollande, Russian President Putin and former Ukrainian President Poroshenko. In fact, Emanuel Macron puts special emphasis on this figure, whose success he has reduced to a personal bet, especially in the year of the French presidential elections and the French six-month EU presidency.

The management of the current situation is expected to be found on the dialogue table of this figure, as well as the rescue in practice. Minsk Peace Agreement, which was achieved in 2014 with the participation of Ukraine, Russia, pro-Russian separatists and the Organization for Development and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). The goal then was to end the bloodshed in eastern Ukraine. However, as the reality in the region shows, the Minsk Agreement has not yet borne fruit.

But the achievement of immediate peace in the region, eight years after the Minsk Agreement and under the threat of a wider conflict, is now considered imperative not only for security in the region but also in Europe. The next week is crucial, with the German chancellor going to Kiev and Moscow for successive contacts.

The US Pentagon has even announced that Russia continues to send troops along the border with Ukraine and Belarus in the last 24 hours, despite efforts to resolve the Ukrainian crisis diplomatically.

“Progress” in diplomatic efforts Olaf Soltz, however, points out that the crisis in Ukraine has eased, noting that in recent weeks “a lot has happened” in various forums, aimed at ensuring security in Europe. At the same time, he clarified that “it is too early to say that the problem has been solved”.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s tour of Moscow, Kiev and Berlin has achieved its goal, as progress has been made to reduce tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Paris said, but warned that “one should not expect” immediate benefits “.

“The goal has been achieved,” the French presidency said, noting that the goal was “for everyone to be able to take a break and consider ways to de-escalate (…) into a period of growing tension” on the Russia-Ukraine front.

A war in Ukraine would be “madness,” Pope Francis said yesterday, expressing hope that tensions between Ukraine and Russia could be overcome through multilateral dialogue.

Trying to align with Europe However, Washington is paying attention to the consequences that Russia will face in the event of an invasion of Ukraine. In this context, it was announced on Wednesday that US Vice President Kamala Harris will travel to Germany for the Munich Security Conference.

The visit of Nikos Dendias is also considered important on February 18th in Moscow at the invitation of Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
