Colorado Supreme Court ruling bars Donald Trump from running in state primary
The legal team of Colorado Republicans has appealed to the US Supreme Court after the state’s highest court ruled that Donald Trump cannot run in the party’s primaries.
The appeal means it will remain on the Colorado primary ballot for now.
Last week, former President was disqualified from the ballot in the state for his alleged role in the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.
Trump, who is ahead of the other Republican candidatesis expected to be party candidate for the 2024 US election.
In its appeal, the Colorado Republican Party’s legal team accused the state Supreme Court of “fundamentally changes the course of American democracy”according to CBS News, which is cited by the BBC.
They added that the decision will “distort” the 2024 presidential election and “will henceforth lead the courts to political strife on nebulous charges of sedition.”
Colorado is the only US state that opposes Trump under a US constitutional clause called the 14th Amendment and which prohibits anyone involved in “sedition” from holding public office.
This was the first time this provision has been used since it was introduced after the American Civil War.
