Françoise Bettencourt Meyers is the 12th richest woman in the world
L’Oréal heiress Françoise Bettencourt Meyers has become the first woman to have a fortune of $100 billion, according to the ranking of the richest people in the world.
The French beauty empire founded by her grandfather is well on its way, having the best performance in the stock market for decades.
L’Oréal shares rose to a record high in Paris on Thursday. The company saw its sales rebound after the pandemic when people used less make-up as they were under lockdown.
The 12th richest woman in the world
The ‘net’ fortune of 70-year-old Bettencourt Meyers exceeded 100 billion dollars in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, making her the 12th richest person in the world.
However, she is quite far from the Frenchman Bernard Arnault, who is second on the list with a net worth of $179 billion. Mr. Arnault is the founder of LVMH, the world’s largest luxury group, who owns Fendi and Louis Vuitton.
Ms. Bettencourt Meyers is the vice-chairman of the company’s board of directors. She and her family are the largest shareholders of L’Oréal at around 35%.
Françoise became the immediate heir to L’Oréal after the death of her mother, Liliane Bettencourt, in 2017.
Liliane Bettencourt’s mother and her vitriolic statements in the media
Liliane maintained close ties with French leaders and the spotlight was constantly on her.
During the last years of her life, she had been involved in a public feud with Françoise and accused her of essentially wanting her dead.

“My daughter could patiently await my death instead of doing all he can to hasten him,’ he said in a TV interview.
In 2011, a French court ruled that Liliane had a form of dementia and placed Françoise in control of her property and income, while another family member took care of Liliane’s health and physical well-being.
Mrs. Bettencourt Meyers unlike her mother, she is more introverted protecting her private life from the media.
She spends her time playing the piano, has written two books about the Greek Gods and author Tom Sancton wrote the book ‘The Bettencourt Affair’ about her life.
