Russia was heavily criticized for its barrage of missile and drone attacks in Ukraine over the past 24 hours, during last night’s UN Security Council meeting.

At least 31 people were killed and more than 160 wounded in the heaviest wave of attacks by Russian forces since the start of the war in February 2022, according to Ukrainian authorities. Poland said a Russian missile violated its airspace before heading to its target in Ukraine.

“Tragically, 2023 ends as it began: with devastating violence against the people of Ukraine,” UN Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Hiary said while briefing the Security Council on Russia’s recent attacks on Ukraine. “Once again, Ukrainians are forced to spend the holidays seeking shelter, removing rubble and burying the dead, in the midst of frost,” he added.

Most members of the UN Security Council – including the US, France and Britain – condemned the Russian attacks in Ukraine.

US envoy John Kelly pointed out that Russian President Vladimir Putin chose, “instead of peace”, to launch a “barrage of missile and drone attacks against another UN member state” in the midst of the holiday season and shortly before since the advent of the new year.

China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Zheng Shuang, stopped short of condemning the Russian attacks, calling for a “political solution” to end the war in Ukraine.

In his lengthy deposition, Russian UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia claimed, among other things, that Russia launched attacks solely against Ukrainian military infrastructure, blaming Ukrainian air defenses for the civilian deaths.

Britain’s ambassador to the UN, Barbara Woodward, emphasized that Russia is entirely responsible for the tragedy in Ukraine. “The rest is a torrent of lies and misinformation,” Woodward replied to her Russian counterpart.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemns Russia’s attacks on Ukraine, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement. “Attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure violate international humanitarian law, are unacceptable and must stop immediately,” he stressed.
