The two South Koreans abducted in the December 12 attack on an oil company convoy in southern Nigeria were freed yesterday, the Foreign Ministry announced today in Seoul.

The two oil company employees had been kidnapped in the Niger Delta region by gunmen who ambushed the convoy, killing two drivers and four soldiers accompanying it.

“Both are in good health. They underwent tests at a hospital, were taken to a safe location and their families were contacted,” South Korea’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

Although attacks in the Niger Delta have decreased significantly in recent years, the wider region is considered extremely dangerous as crude oil thefts and pipeline vandalism take place, affecting the African country’s oil production.
