Mass displacement of Gaza’s population has meant Rafah town has turned into a massive camp – Nearly 200 people killed in 24 hours in Israel’s military operation against Hamas militants
Drone footage from the Reuters news agency captures the tragic situation in the town of Rafah. Thousands of tents have been set up near the border with Egypt as tens of thousands of Palestinians have fled there in recent weeks as a result of intensifying fighting in the southern city of Khan Younis, taking temporary shelter to protect themselves from continued shelling.
The mass movement of the population of Gaza meant that the town of Rafah has turned into a huge camp.
“Enough with this war! We are completely exhausted,” says Umm Louay Abu Khater, a 49-year-old woman who was forced to leave her home in Khan Yunis, taking refuge in Rafah.
“We are constantly displaced from one place to another in cold weather,” he told AFP. “Bombs keep falling on us day and night.”
Continuous pounding on Khan Younis
At the same time, heavy fire from Israeli tanks and airstrikes hit Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip in the evening, residents said, while according to Palestinian authorities almost 200 people were killed within 24 hours in Israel’s military operation against Hamas militants.
Warplanes also raided the Nuseirat camp in the central part of the Palestinian enclave, according to medics and Palestinian journalists.
Israeli forces are pounding Khan Younis in preparation for a further advance on the southern city, parts of which they captured in early December.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallad said Israeli military forces were closing in on Hamas command centers and weapons depots.
The Israeli Armed Forces (IDF) also reported yesterday that they destroyed one of the hideouts of Yahya Shinwar, the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The house was located near the city of Gaza.
100 Palestinians killed and 158 injured by Israeli strikes in central Gaza
One hundred Palestinians have been killed and 158 injured in Israeli strikes in the past 24 hours in the center of the Gaza Strip, a senior health official in the enclave announced today.
A shocking video that was released yesterday shows a baby emerging alive from the ruins after the Israeli attack on the town of Rafah.
The baby’s skin, Maryam Abu Aqel, had turned gray from the dust and she let out small screams as rescuers managed to reach her, digging deep into the debris to free her legs and manage to extricate her.
