Vatican: Pope Francis underscores fraternal friendship and unlimited appreciation for Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew

The pope wanted to talk about the fraternal friendship with the Ecumenical Patriarch, which developed as soon as he succeeded Pope Benedict “not only in Rome, but also in Constantinople, Assisi, Cairo, Jerusalem, Lesvos and Bari.”

Francis emphasizes, however, that he is “absolutely grateful to the Ecumenical Patriarch for the protection of Plasma and for his reflections and thoughts on this subject, from which he has learned and continues to teach so many things.” It also highlights the importance of Bartholomew’s thought and message in the time of the coronavirus pandemic.

“With the outbreak of the pandemic and the expansion of its dramatic health, social and economic consequences, his testimony and teaching on the necessary spiritual turning of man became even more important,” the pope said.

Pope Francis could not miss the effort to return to the full Christian community. More specifically, in his videotaped message he states: “It is our common belief that the closeness and solidarity between us Christians and our Churches, is an imperative contribution to the universal solidarity and social friendship, which humanity has a great and immediate need”.
