During a telephone conversation between the two leaders, Rishi Sunak “underlined the efforts of the United Kingdom to provide military and diplomatic support to Ukraine”
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak today assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of the UK’s unwavering support in 2024 and beyond, if needed.
During the phone call between the two leaders, Rishi Sunak “underlined the efforts the UK is making to provide military and diplomatic support to Ukraine”, including further deliveries of weapons systems, the Downing Street statement said.
He also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and the injured of Russia’s heavy airstrikes during the Christmas holiday season.
Russia launched a new barrage of attacks in Ukraine this morning, killing at least five people and wounding 119, mainly in Kiev and Kharkiv, Ukrainian authorities said. It was preceded by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s threat to step up bombing in Ukraine in retaliation for the attack in Belgorod, which killed 25 people.
According to the briefing from Downing Street, the two leaders also discussed “the latest developments in the conflict, in particular the progress made in the Black Sea and the successes of Ukrainian air defenses, which have been reinforced by surface-to-air missiles from the United Kingdom.” ..
London on Friday announced the delivery of around 200 anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine to bolster its defences, calling on allies to “redouble their efforts” to support Kiev militarily.
Since the beginning of last year, the UK has sent Challenger 2 tanks, three AS-90 self-propelled guns, hundreds of armored vehicles, Storm Shadow long-range missiles and drones. The value of British military aid to Ukraine is estimated to total €5.3 billion.
