The United States is not involved in any way in today’s explosions in Iran and has no reason to believe that Israel is involved, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller assured, stressing that an escalation of conflict in the region “is not to interest’ of any country.

More than 100 people were killed in the Iranian city of Kerman by two explosions today during a memorial service for Revolutionary Guard commander Qassem Soleimani who was killed by a US drone strike in 2020 in Baghdad. Iranian officials blamed “terrorists,” without specifying who they meant.

“The US is not involved in any way. Any claim to the contrary is preposterous,” Miller said, adding: “We have no reason to believe that Israel was involved in this attack.”

Referring to the death of Hamas deputy leader Saleh al-Aruri, Miller said Washington was concerned about the risk of the war spreading to other fronts. The spokesman said he could not speculate on who was responsible for the attack on Aruri, whom he called a “brutal terrorist who has civilian blood on his hands.”

Israel has neither confirmed nor denied that it launched the attack against Aruri.

Washington had not been notified before the strike, Miller noted.
