The double blast that killed at least 103 people on Wednesday near the tomb of General Qassem Soleimani in Kerman, Iran, appears to have been a “terrorist” act of the kind often carried out by the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group in the past, a senior official said. The two blasts took place during a memorial service for General Soleimani, the first about 700 meters from his grave and the second about a kilometer from the first, according to Iran’s official IRNA news agency. Iranian state television reported 211 wounded, some of them in critical condition.
There has been no claim of responsibility so far.
General Soleimani was killed in a US drone strike on the orders of then US President Donald Trump at Baghdad airport in 2020.
