Ukraine said today that its air force struck a Russian command post near the occupied city of Sevastopol, more than 200 kilometers from territory controlled by Kiev, and also hit a military unit in a separate strike on the Crimean peninsula.

Air Force Commander Mykola Olechchuk posted a social media video on the Telegram messaging app showing smoke rising from an explosion near Sevastopol, a Crimean port that serves as the main headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.

“Thank you to the air force pilots and everyone who planned the operation for an exquisite war job,” he said in a Telegram post, referring to footage from local media that showed the unit being attacked.

It also released a screenshot of a social media post that said a Russian military base in the city of Yevpatoria had been hit.

Mikhail Raznozayev, the Moscow-appointed governor of Sevastopol, described the attack as “the most massive in recent years”.

One person was taken to the hospital after being injured by a piece of shrapnel that fell into a house, he wrote on the Telegram.

Reuters was unable to independently verify these reports.

Russia’s defense ministry said its forces had repelled a Ukrainian attack, destroying 10 incoming missiles over the peninsula.

The Strategic Communications Department of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said a Russian command post was hit at 15:00 Greek time near Sevastopol.
