Ukraine’s president has accused Moscow of trying to “Russify” Ukrainian children forcibly taken to Russia
Dozens of children from a Ukrainian city under Russian occupation took part in “emergency training” with the Belarusian army, according to local media.
The state television channel Belarus 4 Mogilev reported on Wednesday that 35 children from the eastern Ukrainian town of Antratsyt, which Russia has occupied since 2014, were sent to the eastern Belarusian town of Mogilev, where they were “taught how to behave in extreme situations in exercises with the Belarusian army.”
In the footage, the children, some wearing tracksuits with Russian flags printed on their sleeves, are seen holding each other and covering their faces during a fire drill.
Thousands of Ukrainian children have been deported to Russia and Belarus from Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine following Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. In July 2023, Russia’s Children’s Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova put the number of children of Ukraine that Russia “accepted” at 700,000. Moscow maintains that most of the children were accompanied by their parents or other relatives.
