The European Data Regulation comes into force, setting new rules for a fair and innovative data economy

The European Data Regulation comes into force today.

New rules define the rights to access and use data generated in all EU economic sectors and facilitate the sharing of industrial data in particular.

The regulation will ensure fairness in the digital environment by defining who can create value from data and under what conditions. It will also boost a competitive and innovative data market by freeing up industry data and providing legal clarity on data use.

Ms. Margrethe Vesteyjer, Executive Vice-President for a Europe Ready for the Digital Age, said: “Today we are taking an important step in our digital transformation. By establishing clear data legislation, we give users control over the sharing of data generated by their connected devices, while ensuring the protection of commercial privacy and the European fundamental right to privacy. »

Mr Thierry Breton, Commissioner for the Internal Market, said: “The entry into force of the Data Regulation marks an essential step in our efforts to shape the digital space. It will enable the development of a thriving, innovative and open European data economy, on our terms. European citizens and European businesses will benefit from the wealth of industrial data that will become available, leading to new data-driven applications, including in the field of artificial intelligence.”

After its entry into force, the European Data Regulation will come into force within 20 months, i.e. on 11 September 2025.
