The United States has imposed sanctions on two shipping companies for their financial support to the Houthi rebels, who are carrying out attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea, while Washington and London carried out strikes in Yemen last night.

The companies, Hong Kong-based Cielo Maritime and Global Tech Marine Services of the United Arab Emirates, transport “Iranian products on behalf” of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the US Treasury Department said in a statement.

“Revenues from the sale of raw materials support the Houthis and their attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden,” it added.

Four ships, which are owned or managed by these companies, are also targeted by US sanctions.

“The United States continues to take action against the illicit Iranian financial networks that fund the Houthis and facilitate their attacks,” Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson was quoted as saying.

“Together with our allies and partners, we will take all available measures to end the destabilizing activities of the Houthis and their threats to global trade,” he added.
