At least 10 people have died and six people are missing in an accident at a coal mine in central China, Chinese state media reported today.

The accident occurred yesterday, Friday, at 14:55 local time (08:55 Greek time) at a coal mine located about 700 kilometers from Beijing, in Pingdingshan, Hebei province, public broadcaster CCTV reported.

The first data of the investigation show that the accident was caused by a gas explosion, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported at the same time.

Mining safety in China has improved greatly in recent decades. However, accidents continue to occur, due to the inherent risk of the industry and the sometimes dubious application of safety guidelines.

In December, 12 people died in a coal mine accident in Heilongjiang, northeast China, and in September, 16 people died in a coal mine fire in southwest China’s Guizhou Province.
