Around 50 to 75 people were invited to the wedding ceremony, according to the website Stuff. Among the guests was Ardern’s successor as prime minister, Chris Hipkins, who is now leader of the opposition, according to the New Zealand Herald.

Ardern, 43, and Gayford, 47, were engaged in May 2019 and were due to marry in early 2022, but the ceremony was called off due to its “go hard, go early” approach to tackling the pandemic, which has allowed New Zealand to keep deaths from the new coronavirus low.

Ardern was New Zealand’s prime minister from 2017 until last January and was one of only two women in the world to give birth while in charge of a country. She had taken her daughter with her to a UN meeting.

In her final speech to parliament, Ardern told Gayford: “Let’s finally get married.” The couple’s daughter is now five years old.
