Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency has released the name of an alleged member of the Hamas network in Sweden, without specifying whether he is in custody.
Israel accused Hamas today Saturday that he was planning an attack on the Israeli embassy in Sweden, as part of an expansion of the Palestinian Islamist group’s actions in Europe, where authorities have announced the arrest of several suspects in the past month.
In a statement issued after the arrests announced by authorities in Denmark, Germany and Sweden, Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency released the name of an alleged member of the Hamas network in Sweden, without specifying whether he was in custody.
There was no immediate response from Hamaswhich in the past has said its policy is to limit attacks on Israel, the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip, all territories where a Palestinian state is sought.
Sweden’s foreign ministry declined to comment on the Israeli embassy’s specific report, but contented itself with a terse statement that said: “Sweden takes its commitments under the Vienna Convention for the Protection of Foreign Representatives very seriously.”
The Mossad statement said a multinational investigation received information that the Hamas network received orders from a group command post in Lebanon and had “intended to attack the Israeli embassy in Sweden, to procure paragliders for use by members of criminal organizations in Europe”.
Hamas used paragliders in its bloody attack on Israel on October 7, which sparked the war in Gaza.
