The day after taking office, France’s new foreign minister, Stéphane Cezournet, assured the Ukrainian government on Saturday that Paris would continue to support Ukraine in its war against Russian invaders.

“Despite the multiplying crises, Ukraine is and will remain a priority for France,” Stéphane Cezournet emphasized during his visit to Kyiv. “The fundamental principles of international law and the values of Europe are at stake in Ukraine, as well as the security interests of the French people,” explained the French Foreign Minister after his meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kouleba.

According to Ukrainian media, the two foreign ministers also discussed Ukraine’s aspirations to join the EU and NATO. “Ukraine’s future is in the European Union,” Cezourne stressed at a joint press conference, as in a few weeks it will be two years since the start of the Russian invasion.

In the wake of yet another barrage of Russian missile and drone attacks, Ukraine’s foreign minister has again called on the West to block the export of products to Russia that could be used to make weapons. “I would like to remind you that many Western-made components have repeatedly been found in Russian missiles launched over the heads of Ukrainians,” Kuleba noted.

The head of French diplomacy assured that Paris will do everything in its power to ensure that Ukraine’s new economic aid package is approved at the EU summit in Brussels on February 1. The funds also concern Ukraine’s long-term investments in infrastructure and energy transition, he added.

The upcoming EU summit was also a topic of discussion during Cezourné’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The French side said that the defense needs of Ukraine and the strengthening of cooperation between the two countries were also discussed.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany announced that Stephane Szjournay is expected on Sunday afternoon in Berlin, where he will hold talks with the head of German diplomacy, Analena Berbock.
