The announcement of the escape on January 7 from prisons in Guayaquil (southwest) of notorious Los Choneros gang leader Jose Adolfo Macia Villamar, known by the nickname “Fito”, triggered chain uprisings by inmates in penitentiaries, which escalated with gang attacks on of law enforcement.
Ecuador’s new president, Daniel Noboa, declared a state of emergency and ordered the military to neutralize criminal gangs, which he called “terrorist groups.”
More than 22,400 troops were mobilized as part of operations to quell prison riots and fight organized crime, while a curfew was imposed.
Residents of Ecuador’s largest cities are trying to gradually return to normal after the panic that spread when gunmen stormed the set of a television station in Guayaquil, which was captured on live broadcast.
