Trump maintains a large lead in the latest poll in Iowa before the primary election in that state.

A long-awaited poll set the tone for the final full day of campaigning in frozen Iowa today, with Donald Trump maintaining a wide lead and Nikki Haley edging Ron Desandes into second place in the race for the GOP presidential nomination.

The poll The Des Moines Register/NBC News poll, released late Saturday night (local time), has Trump at 48 percent, though his share is down 3 percentage points from the December poll.

Former South Carolina Gov. Haley comes in second with 20%, up 4 percentage points, followed by Florida Gov. Ron Desandes with 16%, down 3 percentage points from December.

The poll’s organizers pride themselves on being able to get an accurate snapshot of the mood of Iowa voters.

The survey shows that Trump will do well in the primary election (caucus) that will be held tomorrow, Monday, in Iowa, the first on the way to the presidential election in November.

A victory in Iowa would be for the 77-year-old Trump a big step toward securing the Republican nomination to face the outgoing Democratic president Joe Biden. It would be a sign that many Republicans are willing to overlook Trump’s mounting legal troubles and inflammatory rhetoric.

Trump plans a rally today in Indianola, a suburb of the capital Des Moines, but the weather forced him to cancel an event in the city of Cherokee. The former president canceled two pre-election rallies yesterday, Saturday, and in the evening appeared on a live stream.

“We’re leading by a wide margin in all the polls and you need to get out of your homes,” Trump told his supporters. “It’s very important to send a message for November.”

Desandes and Haley need to do well enough in Iowa to have some momentum going into the next primary on January 23 in New Hampshire.
