Works on paper of Picasso, Goya and Rembrandt believed to have perished in a fire that broke out in a gallery in Seattle, USA.

According to the Seattle Fire Department, last Friday, someone likely lit a fire on a street behind the gallery to warm up from the cold, and then the flames spread to the three-story building.

No one was injured, her principal said Davidson GalleriesCNN’s Rebecca McDoland, but added that many award-winning works in the gallery’s collection were damaged or destroyed.

“A lot of it is hopefully salvageable,” MacDonald said, noting that it will be weeks before the extent of the damage is ascertained.

Davidson Galleries is known for selling works on paper and had planned to move most of its collection from Seattle’s Pioneer Square to a new space at nearby 85 Yesler Way.

In preparation for the move, many valuable works had been moved from the warehouse to other premises and were at risk.

“I feel more sad for the contemporary artists who entrusted us with their work,” said gallery owner Sam Davidson.
