The Spanish government will ban fragrances in all tobacco products, especially the very popular e-cigarettes, which will now be subject to the same regulations as conventional cigarettes
The very popular towards younger smokers flavors in tobacco products in Spain are going to be abolished.
THE Spanish government will ban fragrances in all tobacco products, especially in the very popular electronic cigarettes, which will henceforth be subject to the same regulations as conventional cigarettes, as the Minister of Health announced yesterday.
“The flavors of tobacco products (filters, rolling papers, capsules, etc.) are now prohibited” and the liquid used in e-cigarettes will be subject to “the same regulation as conventional tobacco,” the country’s health minister Monica GarcÃa wrote to X afterwards by the cabinet.
The measure will be implemented within three months after the publication of the decree.
The minister told X that the government of socialist Pedro Sanchez is currently working on “a plan for comprehensive tobacco prevention and control that will include the regulation of vaping devices, the creation of smoke-free spaces and other areas to prevent addiction and the protection of public health”.
As an alternative type of smoking, vaping devices or electronic cigarettes, while they are sometimes presented as a means to definitively stop smoking, have finally established themselves as a substitute for conventional cigarettes.
A vaporizer heats a liquid to release an aerosol, which usually contains nicotine and flavorings, but does not release tar or carbon monoxide — the two most harmful substances in cigarettes that cause cancer and heart disease.
According to World Health Organization (WHO)the electronic cigarette remains a “harmful” product, which releases a “highly addictive” substance: the nicotine.
Spain still has a large number of smokers, who are allowed to smoke on bar terraces, although their numbers have decreased significantly.
About 26% of Spanish adults smoke on a daily basis, a rate that exceeds the global average (22.3%), according to the latest WHO tobacco report.
