“Let me have some coffee…” was the first reaction of the head of the European Central Bank Christine Lagarde when asked by reporter for Bloomberg Television, in Davosfor her point of view about the US elections in November 2024 in light of it lead that Donald Trump appears to be gaining.

The journalist brought up the topic “American elections” and Lagarde responded by saying: “Yes, let me have some coffee” causing laughter from the audience watching the interview.

Answering then in a serious tone he emphasized that it is up to the american people to decide who they will elect as president.

“But obviously all of us are concerned because the US is the largest economy, the strongest military force in the world and has been a beacon of democracy, with all its good and bad things,” he said. “We have to be extremely careful and forecast – just like we do with inflation.”

He added that all scenarios “what happens if…” must be considered and that Europe should stand strong and not think it can rely on supposed friends around the world, because all this is changing.

A few days ago speaking to France 2 Christine Lagarde had said that a possible re-election of Donald Trump would be a “threat” for Europe. “If we draw lessons from history, in terms of the way Trump has conducted himself during his years in office, he is clearly a threat,” he said.
