The suggestion was reportedly made by Anthony Blinken, who told the Israeli prime minister that Hamas cannot be eliminated by military means alone.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly rejected a proposal by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken that Saudi Arabia normalize relations with Israel in exchange for a deal to establish a Palestinian state.
Netanyahu reportedly told Blinken during his visit to Israel last week that he was not willing to make a deal that would allow for a Palestinian state, NBC News reported, citing three unnamed senior US officials.
Blinken replied that Hamas it cannot be eliminated by military means alone and that the failure of Israeli leaders to recognize this will lead to history repeating itself, an American official tells The Times of Israel, confirming this detail from the NBC report.
Blinken’s offer was made to Netanyahu after he received pledges from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and four other Arab leaders to help finance the reconstruction of Gaza after the war and support the Palestinian Authority’s return to the Strip, NBC News reports.
Bin Salman also told Blinken that he was prepared to normalize relations with Israel as part of the reconstruction of Gaza, two US officials told The Times of Israel, noting that he did condition that deal on steps towards the creation of a Palestinian state. However, the officials noted that this condition is much lower than the expectation that Israel would agree to the immediate establishment of a Palestinian state.
