Telephone connection Blinken – Lavrov with hope for de-escalation in Ukraine

by

The US Secretary of State announced today that he will have a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, in a last-ditch effort to prevent a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“We continue to see alarming signs of Russian escalation, especially the arrival of new forces on the Ukrainian border,” Blinken told a news conference from Fiji, where he was visiting today.

“If Russia is really interested in resolving this crisis, which it has created, through diplomacy and dialogue, we are ready to do it,” Blinken said.

“However, this must be done in a context of de-escalation. “So far, we only see escalation on the part of Moscow.”

“It is a critical moment. “We are prepared for anything that could happen,” he said.

Blinken reiterated that Washington and its allies would “quickly” impose severe sanctions on Russia if it invaded Ukraine, which he said could happen “at any time.”

“We do not know if President Putin has made his decision,” he said.

“However, what we do know is that it has created the capacity to act in a very short period of time,” he said.
