A passenger on a flight from Britain to the Canary Islands was arrested today at Faro airport in southern Portugal, to which the flight was diverted due to the disturbance caused by the arrested person and seven other passengers.

The arrested passenger is British-Polish and the other seven rioters are Polish, according to a local police spokeswoman.

Portuguese authorities intervened when the plane, which had taken off from Luton to Lanzarote, landed in Faro due to the presence of “eight unruly passengers”. These passengers “shouted and repeatedly slammed the doors of the luggage storage lockers, consumed alcoholic beverages and ignored the crew’s instructions,” the same source added.

At the request of the police, the seven passengers agreed to disembark without resistance. But one of them refused and adopted a “hostile and aggressive” behavior. He was finally arrested for “disobedience” and “resistance against authority”.

Police did not specify which company was operating the flight in question. According to many British media, it was a flight of the low-cost company Ryanair.
