Police in northern Afghanistan received information about a plane crash in Badakhshan province, a provincial police spokesman said, cited by Reuters.

The local police spokesman said in a statement that the aircraft went down overnight in a remote mountainous region of Badakhshan in the far north of Afghanistan.

He said there were no confirmed details about the type of aircraft, the cause of the crash or casualties.

“A plane has crashed, but the location has not been specified,” provincial official Zabihullah Amiri told AFP.

“We were informed by the villagers,” explained the official of this province, which is located on the border with Tajikistan, China and Pakistan.

The accident occurred in a mountainous area, with difficult access, of this province crossed by the Hindu Kush massif, with peaks exceeding 7,000 meters.

The crash site “is about an eight-hour drive” from the provincial capital Faizabad, Amiri said.

“We sent a team to the spot, but it hasn’t arrived,” he added, “we don’t have any details.”

The official said he hoped to have information from the team “in two to three hours.”
