Schools and universities remained closed in Pakistan’s capital today due to a threat of a terror attack as violence escalates ahead of national elections.

“We would like to inform you that due to security concerns in the capital, we have decided to close all sections of the school,” a private school said in a message to parents, with similar messages being sent across Islamabad.

Sources told the German Agency that there are specific threats of attacks on three universities run by the armed forces. Universities were closed indefinitely.

Security has been beefed up in the capital and law enforcement officers are patrolling the city’s outskirts, the sources said.

Violence by Islamist militants has increased in recent months in Pakistan ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for February 8.

Security is a concern for some politicians ahead of the election.

Earlier this month, Pakistan’s Senate passed a non-binding resolution calling for national elections to be postponed due to security concerns and bad weather.
