The foreign ministers of the 27 receive separately today the Israeli foreign minister and the foreign minister of the Palestinian Authority
The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, currently besieged by Israel waging a war against the Islamist Palestinian group Hamas, “could not be worse“, said today the head of diplomacy of the European Union Joseph Borel.
The foreign ministers of the 27 are receiving the Israeli foreign minister separately today Israel Katz and Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki.
“From now on I will not talk about a peace process, but a process for a two-state solution,” Borrell told reporters ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
Israel cannot build peace “by military means alone,” Borel also emphasized, insisting on the two-state solution.
“What we want is to build a two-state solution. Let’s talk about it,” Borrell told reporters as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated his opposition to “Palestinian rule.”
“What are the other solutions they are considering?” Borrell told reporters in Brussels. “Make all the Palestinians leave? Should they be killed?”, he added.
The head of European diplomacy said he presented to the 27 foreign ministers “a comprehensive approach” to a sustainable peace.
European foreign ministers will also meet for a working lunch with their Egyptian counterparts Sameh Shoukry, Saudi Arabia’s Faisal bin Farhan and Jordan’s Ayman Safadi, as well as Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit.
