Final decisions on the European naval mission in the Red Sea are expected to be made at the next Foreign Affairs Council on February 19, according to European officials.
It remains unknown when it will start the European naval operation in the Red Sea for the escort and protection of merchant ships from pro-Iranian Houthi rebels of Yemen.
As the EU High Representative stated, Joseph Borelin the press conference he gave after the work of the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, the 27 EU countries have agreed on the Authority to organize a European naval mission in the Red Sea, however he does not know how long it will take for its implementation. “Unanimity is needed to see when this mission can be implemented,” Borrell said. “Alternatives are on the table. No member state objected. Some countries may not participate, but they will not stand in the way.” he added and noted that several issues need to be settled such as how this naval operation will operate, exactly what its mandate will be, how far it can go in terms of its scope and which country will lead this mission.
