THE Swedish Foreign Minister stated today that he sees no reason to negotiate with her Hungary on the Nordic country’s accession to NATO, just hours after Budapest invited “discussions” on the matter, while Turkey’s expected ratification of Sweden’s accession to the Alliance appears to leave member state Hungary alone of the Alliance, which will not have ratified Sweden’s accession.

Earlier today the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said he had invited his Swedish counterpart to visit the Hungarian capital for talks aimed at resolving disputes over the ratification of Sweden’s request to join NATO, a process delayed by Hungary and Turkey.

“During the Madrid summit last year, Hungary (..) gave Sweden guest status” with a view to joining NATO, without any reservation, the Swedish Foreign Minister emphasized Tobias Billstrom in the media, reacting to Orban’s invitation. “Therefore, I see no reason for negotiations to take place today,” he added.

Hungary and Turkey are the only countries that have not yet ratified the Swedish request for Sweden to join NATO.

However, today the Turkish National Assembly begins debating the ratification of the Swedish request, and according to reports the Turkish National Assembly is expected to approve the Nordic country’s accession protocol to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

In this case, Hungary will remain the only NATO member country standing in the way of Sweden’s accession.
