Six people died yesterday Tuesday in a remote area northern canada when a small plane carrying diamond company employees crashed, a source familiar with the crash investigation told AFP.
The giant Anglo-Australian mining company Rio Tinto reported that an aircraft that had departed for the Diavik diamond mine carrying “members of its staff” had crashed, resulting in “several” deaths.
The contact with her chartered aircraft Northwestern Air went missing shortly after takeoff at around 08:50 (local time; 17:50 Greek time) near Fort Smith, in northwestern Canada, according to the area’s search and rescue operations coordination center.
In the aircraft seven people were on board, one of whom survived, according to the AFP source. His condition is unclear at this stage.
Rescue crews had to go to the crash site by snowmobile after being dropped by helicopters, about 1.1 km from the runway.
Flights to a small city Fort Smith canceled until later today.
Rio Tinto chief Jacob Stausholm said the company was “devastated” by the news.
