At least 39 people lost their lives today and 9 were injured after the fire which broke out in the basement of a store in the city Xingyu of Jiangxi Provincein China Chinese state media reported and local authorities said, adding that some people were still trapped.

The fire broke out in the afternoon (local time) in the basement of a store on Tiangongnan Avenue in Wushui District, the local fire department headquarters said, according to Chinese news group China Daily.

The injured were taken to hospital, the local authorities said in a statement, without specifying their number.

Following this latest incident, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for efforts to reduce accidents and protect the safety of citizens, according to Xinhua News Network.

The incident came just five days after a school fire in central China’s Henan province killed 13 people.
